November 2005—
Ron began participation in IGBO
tournaments almost 20 years ago, and
has remained a solid supporter all this
time. He has held many positions on
the SDIT committee from Director
on down the line. His most significant
contribution in the San Diego bowling
community is his co-founding 3 new
IGBO affiliated leagues beginning in
1999. His tireless efforts to promote
gay bowling have made him a household
name in the bowling community.
When the first league that Ron helped
start in San Diego joined IGBO, Ron
decided to get more involved on the
national level. He joined the audit committee to
lend his expertise on financial matters, and this
quickly led to him being elected to the Treasurer
position of IGBO, which he held for 4 years. During
those 4 years, Ron contributed countless hours of
his time as well as countless ideas on how IGBO
could save money. The organization was much
better off financially at the end of his term, due in
big part to Ron’s relentless research and ideas on
how to save money.
Ron also was a huge contributor to the Archives
committee, helping Gerald Hagan
transfer numerous files of paperwork to discs
for long term storage. He spent several weeks
in Houston, volunteering his time and money
to achieve this important task.
Ron’s contributions will long be remembered,
but if there is one thing that he will always be
know for, besides his smile and sarcastic wit
that has endeared him to so many people, is his
inability to say memorabilia…
Congratulations Ron. Well done.
This year’s second recipient epitomizes what
the Tom Hack Service Award is all about.
Someone once told me that this individual’s
middle name should have been volunteer.
Normally I would say that the word no is not
in this person’s vocubulary but that is not the
case here because you don’t even get the chance
to ask the question. This person just steps up
and takes care of the job without even having
to be asked. When his city decided to bid to
host an IGBO tournament, he was one of the
first people to volunteer his services and did a
fantastic job as co-director of the tournament.
However, this person’s most significant contribution
to IGBO has been as chairperson of
the Quilt Committee for the past 5 years. In
that period he has personally completed 7 panels
of the quilt, each one taking approximately
50 hours of work. In addition to completing
those panels he also maintains a directory of
all of the names that appear on the quilt.
For his hard work and dedication to the IGBO
quilt, it was my great honour and pleasure to
present the 2005 Tom Hack Service Award
to Dick Cooper.
