April 2005—On April 22-24, Columbus, Ohio was the host city for one of IGBO’s largest tournaments. As 500 bowlers and guests arrived on Friday night, for the first shift of singles/doubles, there was an excitement in the air. COMIC (Columbus Ohio Midwestern Invitational Tournament), had sold out even earlier than it ever had. Everyone was excited about the bowling, the 24 hour hospitality suite and of course the committee show on Saturday night. Even the unexpected snow that fell Sunday morning could not dampen any spirits.

The committee greeted their guests wearing sailor hats to express the theme of “COMIC on The High Seas”. Our visitors from Ontario, Canada surprised us by wearing their sailor hats on Saturday night during the committee show. There was entertainment from Bette Davis and Kate Smith look alikes along with some pretty scary women in towels. The closing number was a tribute to our armed forces all over the world. We were able to raise $1600 that night as part of $4000 that we split between our two charities: Stonewall and The Hope Project.

Once again our 24-hour hospitality suite was a popular place for cards, socializing with old friends and making some new ones. The smoking ban did not seem to keep people from visiting our presenter bar, Tradewinds, or our newest sponsor bar Woofs. We were very glad to have 3 liquor sponsors this year: Captain Morgan, Smirnoff and Hpnotiq. Bud Light was also a sponsor and the banners they had made for us throughout the year were posted in the Columbus Renaissance Hotel, which was our host hotel again. Mr Bills was once again our bowling house. We saw some very nice scores and there were two, 299 games bowled during the weekend.

At the banquet on Sunday night, we were entertained by our comedian, Julie Goldman. We tried to give everyone a little money before they were to go home on Monday morning. Almost $16,000 was raised and given back to the bowlers at the banquet. There were four $1000 dollar prizes that made the winners smile from ear to ear.

We thank all of our visitors for helping us make this another successful tournament. Please visit the COMIC web site,(www.comiconline. org), for upcoming events before we meet again next April 28-30, 2006.
