October 2006—I’m sure some of you have heard of the Susan
G. Komen “Bowl for the Cure”. It is a USBC
sponsored event that helps raise money for
Breast Cancer research. Below is a letter from
one our leagues in Washington, DC regarding
this event. If you have ever thought of doing
something like this, I suggest you go onto
www.bowl.com, and check out the “Bowl for
the cure” link, they have wonderful and fun
ideas for leagues to run this event. Good luck!

Subject: Susan G. Komen - Bowl for the
Cure
Rob,
I am Secretary/Treasurer of the CARA Sunday
Night League. We are in the Washington
DC metro area and a member of IGBO. Our
local USBC associations are NCABA and
WDCAWBA.
For the second year in a row, our league participated
in the USBC Bowl for the Cure which
benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Fund.
Patti Kay Dunlap, Vice-President of the
league and a cancer survivor herself ran this
campaign. It ran for about a month. She
handed out a flyer to each team asking for
donations. Another league, Sunday Nite Mixed
that bowls at the same time was also provided
the flyer. Contributions/pledges started coming
in. In fact, one of our bowler’s Mother,
who is a regular supporter of the league and
comes every week and is a cancer survivor, took
it upon herself to collect donations. She alone
collected $1100.
The other league collected $230. Earlier in
the year, they had a bowler to suddenly die.
Our league took up a collection for his family
of $250. He had no family so the money was
held and added to the Bowl for the Cure fund
in his name.
The total donation sent to USBC was $2800.
We had another successful campaign. We are
currently listed on the top 10 leagues in the
nation on contributions.

Last year this league collected $5000 in donations
for the campaign.
Yours truly,
