USBC Tournament Prize Fund Distribution Rules
By Rob Hisey—Southwest Pacific Nations Regional Director Republished from October 2006 IGBO Newsletter
October 2006—USBC has very specific rules regarding prize fund distribution and ratios of prize fund. See
Rule #305, 306, 307, 308.
The minimum payout for singles, doubles, and
team is a ratio of 1:10, and the minimum ratio
for individual all-events and team all-events is
1:20. This may seem fairly standard to most of
us, but where this gets tricky is the formula
that needs to be used to calculate the payouts.
If, on your entry form, your prize fund contribution
from the entry fee is $40, and the payout
ratio listed is 1:10 for singles, doubles and
team and 1:20 for individual and team allevents,
you must put $10 into singles, $10
into doubles, $10 into team, and $5 into individual
all-events and $5 into team all-events.
The formula for distribution would be 25%
of the prize fund into each singles, 25% of the
prize fund into doubles and 25% of the prize
fund into team, and 12.5% into individual
and 12.5% into team all-events
(25%+25%+25%+12.5%+12.5%=100%).
If there is no team all-events, then your distribution
would be 28.5% of the entry prize fund
for each singles, doubles and team, and 14.25%
for individual all events
(28.5%+28.5%+28.5%+14.25%=approx
100%).
Supplemental Prize Funds
Tournament Sponsors-If you have a sponsor
for your tournament that does not specify
what the money is to be used for you must use
the same percentages listed above. Note on
the USBC Financials it asks about any sponsor
income collect. If the sponsor directs the tournament
to use the money for a specific item
like, (Banquet, Printing or Registration Book
or Entry, Donates Alcohol for a party, etc. etc.
then the money does not have to be added to
the prize fund.
Supplementing the prize fund—If your
tournament supplements the prize fund, the
money can be distributed to any event at any
percentage the tournament decides to. Example:
If your tournament raised extra money
and you want to add $5,000, you can add
$2,000 to Doubles event and $3,000 to Team
Event.
Finally, if you have over 100 bowlers, 2nd
place payout must be at least 50% of 1st Place,
and last place to cash must be at least the
amount of the prize fund fee for that event.
To alleviate any questions and potential controversies,
USBC recommends listing your prize
fund breakdown on the entry form. Just put
how much of the prize fund from the entry fee
is going into each event, and every thing should
be approved on your USBC application. If
you have any questions about this, see your
Regional Director, or call your local USBC
office.
