October 2006—You don’t want to miss the introduction of
Detroit’s latest model being unveiled this
November. It’s the brand-new IGBO MIDYEAR
for 2006, and the Motor City is
gearing up to make it an event you’ll remember.
This is the second time Detroit has hosted
the mid-year tournament. The first time was October,
1992.
Detroit began its IGBO affiliation in 1984 with
the first Detroit tournament being held July 4th
weekend, 1985.
Detroit, it seems, is a city of firsts.
Not only was Detroit the first capital of Michigan
but it can make claim to a number of other firsts...
like installing the country’s first mile of paved concrete
road in 1909... installing the first traffic light
in 1915... building the nation’s first urban freeway...
sharing the world’s first auto traffic tunnel
between two nations - the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel...
being the home of the first state fair in the
U.S…and Detroit is first in bowling with the most
registered bowlers in the United States. This among
other interesting achievements made it a likely
choice to hold IGBO Mid-Year 2006 here.
The host hotel is the Sheraton Detroit Novi located
only 25 minutes from downtown and 10 minutes
from the bowling center. The IGBO rate is
$79 per night for up to 4 persons and parking is
free.
All bowling events will take place at Cloverlanes
bowling alley with 64 wood lanes. Both optional
scratch and handicap brackets for men and women
are available so there are many ways to earn some
money – no matter what your average. Singles and
Doubles events will take place in 2 shifts Friday,
November 10th, and Team event, Saturday, November
11th with a morning and afternoon shift.
Optional Scratch Masters will be conducted Sunday
morning with the banquet, IGBABE pageant
and closing party to follow later that evening going
on until the wee hours.
Also planned is a “Ladies’ Texas Hold Em” night.
Men welcome…for a nominal fee.
You will find there’s plenty to do while you’re not
bowling or party-ing at one of Detroit Gay bars, or
in the 24-hour hospitality suites hosted each day
by the Great Lakes Region volunteers, the Grand
Rapids crew, or the San Diego IGBO Mid-Year
2008 committee plus our own committee. You can
relive yesteryear and visit HITSVILLE USA, the
Motown music museum or THE HENRY FORD
Greenfield Village and Ford Museum complex.
Dine ethnically in Greektown and Mexicantown
or the many other diverse eateries in the city or
near the hotel. Try your luck at Detroit’s three
casinos plus Windsor Casino across the river south
of Detroit.. that’s right SOUTH! (A casino excursion
is being planned for those who feel lucky).
No matter what your tastes and interests we’ve got
your license to rev it up in the Motor City. Come
visit. Bowl good. Play safe. Have fun. We welcome
you - whether it’s your first visit or you’re coming
back again.
