Greetings from the great Pacific Northwest!  Everyone ready for summer?

As of this article, we were just getting ready to head Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for the 25th Anniversary of the Vancouver English Bay Cup -- the Silver Legacy! March 14-16 isn't quite spring yet, so hopefully the weather will be cooperate.  Deadline had just past and 122 bowlers entries had been accepted prior to the deadline date.  Then, the following weekend, Western Cup XXVI was to have been held, March 21-23, 2008 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Reports for both of these tournaments will be send out in an update to the region representatives as well as a summary in the next newsletter.

Then, in late May, I will be attending the IGBO Annual tournament in Atlanta Georgia.  Already, there have been a large number of bowlers who have already registered for the tournament.  Judging from hotel reservations, it appears that there may be 700 or more bowlers for the Annual tournament!  If you haven't made your hotel reservations or completed your entry, please do so!  You can register and pay online all at the same time.  Go to www.igbo.org for more information.

The week after IGBO Atlanta, Portland will host it's own 25th Anniversary tournament, May 30 - June 1, 2008.  Tom Geil, one of the co-tournament coordinators, made the following special report:

"The Board of Trustees of the Rose Bowl Classic are making plans for a festive weekend to celebrate its 25th Silver Jubilee Tournament.  One of the earliest tournaments on the IGBO circuit, Portland is bringing back some of its traditions, while adding some new ones.  The founding league, the Sunday Portland Community Bowling League has sponsored a $300 cash prize to the first bowler to roll a perfect 300 Game during the tournament.  The Sunday Awards Banquet is returning to its roots at one of Portland's largest dance bars, The Embers, a 25 year sponsor.  Following the awards, the lights go down, and the music comes up for an afternoon Tea Dance party.

Over the years, Portland became famous as the home of the original Boxer Bowl.  For over a decade, this raucous, fun event has given Portland quite a reputation.  This year, to add a new twist, the Saturday Night Social has become the Slumbor Bowl, with bowlers encouraged to bring their pajamas and baby dolls (and yes, boxers still qualify as appropriate sleepwear).  Bowlers might want bring along their pillows for an old fashioned pillow fight.  Additionally, the RBC Committee will host a contest for the best Rock Hudson and Doris Day lookalikes from the movie "Pillow Talk."

Portland has been awarding 1 oz pure Silver medallions for over a decade.  This year, being their Silver Anniversary, Portland is kicking it up a notch, with very special silver awards.  But wait!  There's more!  Portland has contacted Guiness Book of World Records, and is in the process of arranging a contest for the longest side-by-side stretch of bowlers striking at the same time. For more information on this special opportunity, other features of the tournament, and to request entry forms, please view the website at www.rosebowlclassic.com.  As a test to see how many bowlers are actually reading this portion of the Pacific Northwest Region news, Portland has a special 25th Anniversary secret.  You may want to consult mapquest.com for this offer.  To celebrate our 25th Anniversary, on April 25th the first bowler at a distance of 1000 miles or more away from Portland to email us at pdxbowl@comcast.net will receive a free entry to our 25th Rose Bowl Classic.  The email must be dated after midnight on that date.  We will verify the date and time to ensure that the very first responder will win that FREE entry.  See you in Portland!"

Thanks Tom for contributing!  I'm already curious as to who might win that free entry!  It seems like everyone is having their 25th Anniversary tournament this year.  I recently returned from Louisville, Kentucky in mid-February where I participated in th 25th Bluegrass Classic.  I didn't come back with any awards, but I didn't mind.  I was able to see so many of the friends I made when I lived there.  Many new friends were made each year from other cities came to the Bluegrass Classic.  Thanks to Rich Kraemer, North American Heartland Regional Director, for helping a wayward soul by finding him a team to bowl with this year!  And, as in past years, new friends were made.

In closing, I want to recognize fellow PDX Pride league bowlers:  Jon Sauer, who bowled a 297 on Friday, February 2, 2008.  Jon completed the night with a 738 series.  There happened to be higher series that night, however, going to Mark Earley, PDX Pride league secretary who finished with a 768 series.  Congrats!
